Should Itamar Ben-Gvir visit the Temple Mount?

Itamar Ben-Gvir’s visit to the Temple Mount drew international condemnation from the Arab world and Palestinian leadership. The UN convened an “emergency session” to discuss the move and even the U.S. wasn’t happy about it, with the Biden Administration saying that it “opposes any steps that could harm the status quo” at the holy site.

What’s behind this intense reaction to one person’s visit to this holy site? Was this level of response really necessary? Most importantly, should Ben-Gvir be allowed to visit the Temple Mount at all?
